So my wife and I went to this art and music showcase this past Friday. I was really excited since I am into art and love to hear new music. Since this show was at a bar. It wasn’t your typical art show and it was the bars third time doing this. What was nice though was that the bar is big along with a huge outdoor patio. The patio was where most of the new and upcoming talented artist was set up. The show consists of oil on canvas and acrylic paints, handmade jewelry, pottery, T-shirt design and designer clothing. For the music the show had live bands playing inside of the bar and a live DJ mixing music out on the patio. I loved the mixed music that the DJ was doing. Right up my alley.
I think the bar has a good idea about having this type of event. It gives new upcoming artist a chance to express themselves and having other people see their work. Plus, it gives the artist to sell their work and make some extra money. We all know that it’s very hard to make a living being an artist.
The only bad thing I can say is since it is at a bar. You really are not going to get people to come and buy some of this artwork. People come in and look around but really they are their to drink. It’s Saturday night and you are in a Irish bar. Really, the main reason we went was to support my college friend who I haven’t seen in 7 years. She is a very talented illustrator who is also a Graphic Designer. She has never done this before and wanted to give it a try. She enjoyed it but did not sell anything.Art and Music Showcase
Ever since I started StingRay Graphics. I have always thought to myself. When will I ever afford print advertising for my company. It is so expensive and you can’t advertise just once. You have to keep doing it over and over to get noticed. I would love to do a billboard ad for my company. Man, seeing that on 95 would be really cool. You couldn’t ask for a better place to start out with. The amount of cars that go by in a span of a day. This is just one way of advertising. There are so many other ways but lets just talk about this one for now.
I have a link to another blog site talking about billboard advertising cost. http://myadbuyer.wordpress.com/2009/04/08/billboard-advertising-costs-how-much-do-billboard-ads-cost/ – (Digital Billboard #1 – This board is on I-95 just south of Hallendale Blvd. Ad rotation: 6 advertisers. 9 second duration. Cost is $4500 net per display.)
So $4500 for a rotating ad every 9 sec while sharing the board with 8 other advertisers. I assume this is a month to month price too. Again, you can’t do it only one time. I would say at least 3 to 6 months if you are a new company trying to get your name out. I’m looking at about $15000 to do a billboard. Like I have that kind of money lying around. Oh wait, let me look under my mattress. Just looked and i found 50 cents. No not the rapper. Maybe he can loan me the money though. I’ll get him as a client.
Maybe I should start smaller like magazine ads. Yeah, that sounds good. But for now I’ll stick with online ads for now.
Well we all know that a graphic designer is much different than a web designer. But is one better than the other. In my opinion, no. I have been a graphic designer for over 8 years now and love it. There was a time that graphics was all I wanted to do. It is not the case anymore. Life changes, you change and the world changes. The printing industry along with graphic design is slowing down. Guess what is striving to the top, you guessed it, web design.
So for me I had to change and step out of my comfort zone and learn something new “web design” which is much harder and a lot different thought process than graphics than I thought. Now as a graphic and web designer I see both sides. The two professions are just different not better than one another.
Their was a time when companies needed two people for graphic and web. Now with this economy they want one to be able to do both and it’s working. Hints why I am back in school for web design. I will say that you get a better salary with web design though. lol
What do you all think about this? Are you a web guy a graphic guy or both?
There’s so much art out in the world, but is it really art. Here’s the definition of art “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture”. Lets add some more though… photography, architecture, graffiti and digital art. Of course there are tons more than this though.
I do agree with the definition about it being an expression of human creativity. I just think sometimes people will just consider art to be anything. I can take my trash from my house and glue it on some poster board and call it art. Someone else in this world would also think it is art, but is it. It fits the definition of art right.
I have a photo here of one famous painter and his name is Jackson Pollock. He was well known for throwing paint onto canvas. Image below of one of his paintings. This is something any child can do and adult. Do you consider this art? Don’t think i’m picking on this famous painter. I am just giving an example of what some people might think it’s art and some might not. Why can’t I throw paint on canvas and become famous. Two things, 1. you really need to be different and have a HUGE following to get noticed along with rich people to buy your paintings. 2. For some reason in this society you have to be dead to really make millions off your own work. Clearly, I shouldn’t have to mention the famous names of some million dollar paintings or do I.
This is just one little section in paint of what is considered art. I’m just scratching the surface of what else might be thought of art.
I guess everyone sees art differently. How do you see it?
Many designers have their own opinion about this. Some designers like to have a certain title and others don’t. For instance, graphic designer, web designer, web developer, programmer, creative director and art director. The reason being is that these titles will determine your salary. In many cases in the job market when you are looking for a job you already have had some sort of title.
Depending on your profession. Money/salary is always the top question. Different job titles have different pay scales. A graphic designer gets paid less than a web designer and a programmer gets paid more than both of them and so on. So if your a bad ass and can do all or some of these positions. Then make sure you give yourself the proper title or by going after the title that you want to be represented as when searching for that dream job. Work for yourself even better. Give yourself the best and highest title you want.
Lets see what you think on this topic. Do you care what title you are given when working for someone else? Even if the money is right.
